Movement disorders are neurological syndromes in which there is either an excess or scarcity of voluntary and/or automatic movements that is unrelated to paresis or spasticity. Movement disorders can occur as a sequela of stroke or brain injury and can be physically and psychologically debilitating. This session will focus on the evaluation and management of disorders of excessive movement, also known as hyperkinesias, which include dystonia, ballism, myoclonus and tremors.
We will review diagnostic criteria and management of hyperkinesias including physical modalities, pharmacologic interventions, focal injections and neuromodulation. Challenging interactive cases with video will be presented to demonstrate the multidisciplinary and multifaceted team approach that is often required to help these patients due to the complex interaction of the movement disorder with their other neurological deficits.
