This program has been reviewed by the Texas Consortium on Experiential Programs and has been approved for preceptor education and training for Texas preceptors.

The purpose of this session is to educate the attendees on what second victim syndrome (SVS) involves, highlight how it differs from burnout, describe signs and symptoms of identification, and provide mitigation strategies. Specifically, emphasis on peer support programs and how pharmacy preceptors can identify and support their peers and residents who experience SVS will be outlined. The development of a structured peer support program will be described, with implementation tips and techniques.

Learning Objectives:

Identify risk factors, signs, and symptoms of second victim syndrome (SVS).
Differentiate between the stages of SVS.
Summarize how peer and institutional support systems impact outcomes during the recovery process of a second victim.
Given a case scenario, develop a peer support plan for treating a second victim.
