Vern’s fire service career spans two decades in both operational and prevention capacities from Firefighter to Chief Officer, and Fire Marshal. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant and Manager for the Jensen Hughes Colorado Springs operations. He holds a bachelor’s in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from Oklahoma State University, a master’s in Public Administration (MPA), and is a 2009 graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy.
Vern holds the grade of Member (MIFireE) with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and retains a current Fire Marshal (FM) and past Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation through the Commission on Professional Credentialing/Center for Public Safety Excellence. He’s a Certified Fire Protection Specialist through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a Certified Fire Investigation Technician through the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), holds a CT designation through the National Institute of Certified Engineering Technologies (NICET), is a FAA Part 107 UAS Pilot, and is a certified Fire Inspector II and Plans Examiner through the International Code Council (ICC). He maintains Fire Inspector III, Firefighter, Fire Service Instructor and EMT certifications. He’s completed National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) training in wildland firefighting and serves as a technical member on NFPA 1140: Standard for Wildland Fire Protection.
Vern has taught courses in structural and wildfire strategy and tactics, fire protection systems, water supply, building construction, and fire behavior. He’s been a co-keynote presenter at the I-Chiefs Wildfire Conference, has presented at the Colorado Wildfire conference, the Canadian FireSmart Conference, and the National Association of State Fire Marshals conference.
