Session Description: Physiatrists play a central role in the rehabilitation team in all practice settings. A key role of the Physiatrist is prescribing rehabilitation therapies and exercise, in its many forms, is central to most rehabilitation prescriptions. Beyond functional restoration, exercise can be considered as medicine with outcomes of scientific studies supporting this premise. As such, there is a role to prescribe exercise as medicine in primary disease prevention, in functional restoration after an acute event, in secondary disease prevention, and in on-going wellness efforts.

The Exercise as Medicine community session will discuss the role of exercise in the prevention, functional restoration and ongoing wellness for different disabling conditions. We will address the literature that supports the prescription of exercise as medicine and identify areas of opportunity to incorporate into current practice settings - from acute care through outpatient clinics to the community. Exercise prescription writing will be emphasized as well as monitoring the impact of that prescription and how to modify it to optimize functional and health outcomes achieving 'best-practice'.

The session will be divided into 2 hours of didactics - eight, 15 minute talks with Q/A on different topics followed by a 15 minute panel discussion and open conversation. The last 45 minutes of the session will be an open networking session where participants will have an opportunity to share their experience of prescribing exercise as medicine. As well, we will discuss the ongoing structure, function and goals of the Exercise as Medicine community.
