Lab Marketing

Description: : Three Dimensional (3D) printing is gaining use in the medical field, and one such area is PM&R is in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. As 3D printing is becoming increasingly ubiquitous as lowered prices and more user-friendly software increases accessibility, it is becoming more relevant for many physiatric practices. We will provide participants with hands-on training of software and hardware, as well as demonstrations of previously printed devices. We will provide further provide participants with insight and advice gained from our use of 3D printed devices in diverse patients and settings: pediatric patients, burn and frostbite patients, renal/liver transplant patients as well as providing services to under-resourced populations.

Why is this lab needed? : With recent advances in technology, 3D printing and imaging have become available in non industrial settings. There is flourishing and active freeware and share community for multiple 3D printing projects, including templates for orthotics and prosthetics. New printers can print customized devices overnight and with any number of user-specified options, making rapid delivery and prototyping possible in ways that were never thought of before. Special applications of this new technology can be in temporary and training prosthetics, specialty attachments, pediatrics where growth is rapid, and for underserved settings. If the Rehabilitation Medicine community embraces this novel technology, we can help alleviate the global disparity of access to prostheses, orthoses and other durable medical equipment.

Lab Outline/Format:: Session 1: Demonstration of 3D printed myelectric upper extremity prosthesis. Participants will have ability to try on the device and operate it themselves. Lastly, a partially assembled version will be available for a detailed look at the internal hardware of the device.

Session 2: The following 3D printed upper extremity prostheses and devices will be available for hands-on examination and operation: partial hand both flexion and extension based, fingers, transradial device, bottle opener, abdominal spleen guard, fidget cube.

Station 3: Unassembled and partially assembled body-powered upper extremity prostheses will be assembled by participants with expert guidance (ie Raptor and Phoenix hands).

Session 4: Demonstration and tutorials for 3D design software (Computer Assisted Design/CAD), as well as live printing of a series of small printables.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to run and trouble shoot 3D printed myeloectric prostheses.
As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to identify various 3D printable prosthetic and orthotic devices, as well as how available technologies affect their production.
As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to assemble basic 3D printed prosthetic hands.
As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to design basic 3D printable files, and input the CAD file into a 3D printer.
