Purpose: To examine trends and characteristics of recall rates and success of treatment in pediatric patients treated in the operating room for early-childhood-caries (ECCOR).
Methods: Records of ECCOR children <72 months old treated from 2015-2018 at Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital reviewed for follow-ups over a two-year period. Patient characteristics analyzed were: demographics, language, and dental treatment.
Results: Dental care was performed on 242 children, and 179 met the inclusion criteria. Fifty-four percent (N=97) returned for at least one recall or emergency exam, but 0 percent (N=0) for all 4 routine recalls. There was no statistically significant relationship between recall and language. (Chi2, P= .081).
Treatments completed in the OR were recorded. Additional treatment needs within two-years were considered as failures. The success rates of posterior restorations were: 92 percent (N=11) of 1-surface amalgams, 100 percent (N=4) of 2-surface amalgams, 91 percent (N=52) of 1-surface composites, 82 percent (N=31) of 2-surface composites, 96 percent (N=314) of SSCs, and 91 percent (N=167) of P/SSC. The success rates of incisor restorations were: 85 percent (N=12) 1-surface composite, 75 percent (N=9) 2-surface composite, 61 percent (N=11) 3-surface composite, and 88 percent (N=74) 4+ composite/ strip crowns.
Conclusion: Recall rates were overall poor and frequency of routine recalls decreased. Statistical analysis revealed no significant findings. Full coverage restorations had higher rates of success suggesting full coverage restorations should be the treatment of choice for ECCOR.
