Takuya Yamagishi, M.D., Ph.D. is a chief of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research Center, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Japan and also a coordinator of Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) at NIID. Dr Yamagishi trained at Tokyo Saiseikai Central Hospital during his residency and completed a fellowship at Urological Department, Yokohama City University Hospital, where he also attended his undergraduate studies. During that time, Dr Yamagishi devoted himself to renal transplantation, infection prevention and control and outbreak response to AMR events. Afterwards, Dr Yamagishi trained at FETP to study field epidemiology. After the completion of the two-year program, Dr Yamagishi contributed AMR surveillance (Japan Nosocomial Infections Surveillance: JANIS) at NIID for two years. Then, Dr Yamagishi joined NIID as an FETP coordinator in 2012, and was assigned as a chief of AMR Research Center in 2020. He was seconded to Health Emergency Programme, World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office between 2015 to 2017 as a medical officer, and handled several intarnational emerging disease outbreaks/events including Zika virus infection.
At NIID, Dr Yamagishi takes a lead of risk assessment and response to emerging infectious disease outbreaks and AMR events, and contributed to the response of the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship COVID-19 outbreak as an epidemiologist.
