Dr. Cortes is an internal medicine physician and infectious diseases specialist. Since 2005 have been dedicated to HIV/AIDS in both patient care and research. She has a position as Associate Professor at University of Chile with academic activities involving undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students.
Dr Cortes has worked for more than 15 years at Fundación Arriarán, the first and largest HIV care center in Chile, where she has clinical responsibilities in the care of PLWH. As part of the research unit she has mentored undergraduate students, residents, ID fellows, master and PhD students.
She has participated as a member and Chair of the HIV advisory committee of the Chilean Infectious Diseases Society (SOCHINF) and currently she is the vice president for SOCHINF.
She is an acting consultant for the Chilean Ministry of Health, worked in the development and update of national clinical guidelines for HIV/AIDS management and taken part in several committees involving HIV prevention, testing and treatment strategies. Currently she is part of the advisory committee for the Ministry of Health for COVID-19 national guidelines.
Dr Cortes participates as principal investigator and co-researcher in studies for the main Latin-American epidemiologic HIV Cohort: The Caribbean, Central and South America network for HIV epidemiology (CCASAnet) that is a regional Member of the International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) founded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) . Her research interest in HIV includes women issues, migrant’s health, hepatitis co-infections and recently studies in microbiome and chronic inflammatory response.
In 2017 with a group of academics from the Faculty of Medicine of University of Chile she created the Center for HIV/AIDS Integral Research (CHAIR), the first interdisciplinary research and extension center for HIV related issues in Chile. She is a founder and Co-director of this center. This group brings together molecular virologists, ID clinicians and specialists in public health, seeks to investigate HIV in a comprehensive way. CHAIR members are doing research joining basic, clinical and epidemiological research. Other objectives of this group are outreach activities including science education with a focus on school students and massive HIV testing in remote places with poor access to health providers.
Dr Cortes authored and co-authored 58 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters in migration health and HIV topics. She is deputy editor of JIAS the Journal of international AIDS Society and editor in charge of the HIV section of the Chilean journal of infectious diseases (REVINF) and reviewer for multiple journals (PLOS One, BMJ, BMC, IJTLD, European journal of clinical pharmacology among other national journals).
