Dr. Akhtar completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2003. Following graduation she pursued a combined MD/PhD degree from UAB where she joined the laboratory of Dr. Tika Benvensite, and studied the mechanisms of HIV-1 immune evasion within the brain. Dr. Akhtar then moved to Philadelphia for Pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in 2011. She stayed at CHOP to pursue an Infectious Diseases fellowship, and continue her research education in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Weitzman. Here, Dr. Akhtar studied herpes simplex virus (HSV) genetic variation within the neonatal population, and the role of viral variation on the clinical manifestations of disease. Following fellowship, Dr. Akhtar became an Instructor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, and an attending physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at CHOP. She recently accepted her current position as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and attending physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
