Zachary Hostetler, MD, PhD earned his BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Pennsylvania State University and his MD and PhD degrees at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In his doctoral research, Dr. Hostetler refined a biochemical approach for labeling proteins with small fluorescent labels, allowing for more precise measurements of protein structure and function. He then utilized this method to reveal the molecular mechanism of a crucial protein-protein interaction that activates the SOS response, a bacterial pathway known to contribute to antibiotic survival and evasion. His work has informed ongoing efforts to develop small molecules that can target the SOS response and disarm the ability of bacteria to evade antibiotics. Presently, he is now training as an Internal Medicine resident at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, and he plans to pursue further sub-specialty fellowship training in Infectious Diseases. Throughout his academic training, Dr. Hostetler has maintained a broad academic interest in bacterial pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance, and he hopes to continue advancing research and clinical strategies aimed at slowing and preventing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
