Professor
Western University
I am a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University. My PhD training was in molecular evolution at Dalhousie University with Ford Doolittle and my postdoctoral training focused on mobile introns in the labs of David Shub and Marlene Belfort in Albany, NY. I have been at Western University since 2003. For the past 10 years, my lab has been working the field of genome editing and synthetic biology. We have developed CRISPR-based genome editing nucleases for the modification of mammalian, algal and bacterial genomes. Recently, we have developed plasmid-based conjugation as a delivery method for introducing CRISPR into microbiomes for selective control of species and for modulation of gene expression. My laboratory is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Reseach Council of Canada, and MITACS. I mentor doctoral and undergraduate students in a collegial and collaborative environment. I have significant administrative experience as past Acting Chair of the Department of Biochemistry. I am the nominated Expert Researcher for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in the area of CRISPR and synthetic biology.
