Dr. Morton is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (CPS) in infectious diseases (ID) and antimicrobial stewardship (AS) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He has over 25 years’ experience in a wide range of health care facilities and systems practicing and teaching ID pharmacotherapy as well as leading AS programs.
After receiving his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Florida in 1993, Dr. Morton completed residency training at Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee. He spent the first seven years of his career as an Internal Medicine (IM)/ID CPS and AS program coordinator at the medical center of a private non-profit health system. This was followed by nine years practicing IM/ID and coordinating AS activities at a regional safety net hospital. From 2009 to 2013 in Riyadh Saudi Arabia he was an Associate Professor of Pharmacy at King Saud University and consultant CPS in ID and AS for four health systems. Upon returning to the US, he spent 5 years at a Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center where he implemented an AS program, post-graduate year 2 pharmacy residency, and academic detailing educational outreach program. He has recently joined the Infectious Disease Department and Pharmaceutical Department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a member of their AS team and Antimicrobial Utilization Improvement Committee (AUIC).
Dr. Morton is a Board-Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP). In the US and internationally he has delivered 425 didactic lectures, given 130 invited presentations at professional meetings, personally trained 360 pharmacy students and residents on clinical rotations, and directed 20 pharmacy residents’ research projects. He has received several teaching and practice awards including Preceptor of the Year from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and Health System Pharmacist of the Year from the Tennessee Society of Health System Pharmacists.
