Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists
After nearly eight years, Dr. Jeffrey Engel retired as the Executive Director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) in March 2020. His retirement lasted one weekend as he then assumed the role as Senior Adviser for the COVID-19 response for CSTE. Before coming to CSTE, he served as North Carolina’s State Health Director from 2009 to 2012, leading the Division of Public Health in the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. From 2002 to 2009, he was the State Epidemiologist and Chief of the Epidemiology Section for the NC Division of Public Health. He has been a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and Hospital Epidemiologist at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. Dr. Engel received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and did a residency and fellowship in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He is a Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and a member of American Public Health Association and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Alumni Society. For the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Engel co-chaired the National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee, was a member of the Health Care Infection Control Policy Advisory Committee, and currently serves on the United States National Certification Committee for the Global Eradication of Poliomyelitis. He serves or served on the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, Editorial Board for the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, the Board of Directors of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, and the Executive Board of CSTE. Dr. Engel is Board Certified in Internal Medicine (1984) and Adult Infectious Diseases (1988).
Dr. Engel is married to Susan Ehrlich, MSW, LCSW and they have three children, Benjamin, Hannah (and son-in-law, Steven Lemeshow), and Sophie; and two grandchildren, Jack and Gideon. Dr. Engel enjoys hiking, yoga, gardening and music; he can be seen playing guitar and bouzouki at Celtic music sessions in Raleigh, NC and Atlanta, GA (during COVID-free times).
