Dr. Koval was trained at the University of Rochester, initially focusing on HIV research and care. In the lab of Dr. Lisa Demeter, she investigated the effects of NNRTI drug resistance mutaitons on viral fitness. However, she felt best suited to clinical care in immunocompromised hosts.In 2006, the year that surgeons performed 240 liver transplants at the University of Rochester, she became the lone Transplant Infectious Disease consultant. In 2010, she moved to the Cleveland Clinic, joining an esteemed Transplant ID group. She is currently the chief of Transplant Infectious Diseases, a section that manages infectious complications for over 500 new solid organ transplant recpiients each year. She has published on CMV, ventricular assist device infections, transplantatoin in people living with HIV and bacteriophage therapy in cystic fibrosis recipients following lung transplantaiton.
