This course will provide a broad overview of systemic and ocular diabetes management from the perspective of an optometrist with a practice specializing in diabetes care who has also lived with diabetes for more than 50 years. Emphasis will be placed on major advances in all aspects of diabetes care over the last several decades, as well as multiple fallacious "diabetes truisms" held by patients and doctors alike.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Describe the evolving paradigm shift for earlier treatment of diabetes-related retinal diseases
Enumerate which specific systemic diabetes therapies offer significant cardio-, reno- and retino-protection and for which specific patients these agents are most appropriate
Describe and offer counter-evidence for at least five major, fallacious diabetes 'truisms' that are widely and erroneously believed by patients and many health care providers
Recommend appropriate glycemic targets for specific patients based on glycated hemoglobin, glucose time-in-range and glucose time-above range using continuous glucose monitoring systems
Develop a concrete, evidence-based action plan for prevention of both diabetes and its complications
