Providing timely access to comprehensive, integrated healthcare is a major challenge for health systems. The Veterans Administration (VA) undertook a Business Value Justification (BVJ) assessment to corroborate how the Pittsburgh VA Healthcare System has optimized innovative in-person and virtual comprehensive team-based care for oncology patients that uses the right modality at the right time for the right type of care. Using a virtual format, established measurement plan and structured methodology, which included a Healthcare Failure Mode, Effect, and Impact Assessment (HFMEIA), VA validated that the Pittsburgh Oncology Comprehensive Care Model (OCCM) reduced the financial burden and time commitment for Veterans and providers due to less travel; improved access to multidisciplinary cancer care; provided safe access to cancer treatment and management; maintained the same care processes regardless of which site the Veteran was receiving care, and created new specialty-specific healthcare jobs in rural areas. As 66% of rural counties do not have access to oncologists, the Pittsburgh OCCM provides highly reliable patient-centric care that optimizes the use of telehealth, institutionalizes timely access, patient safety and accountability, and provides a potential return on investment through benefits realization for the Veteran, provider, and VA.
Learning Objectives:

Employ virtual and in-person healthcare delivery together to improve access and outcomes using modern technology, integrated multispecialty care teams, and defined supportive business processes.
Produce strategic, operational, and foundational benefits and ROI through the care model.
