Carotid artery disease (CAD) can be treated with a combination of lifestyle choices and modifications, along with drug therapy. These include: a healthy lifestyle, diet, smoking cessation, blood pressure control, antiplatelet therapy, and lipid lowering drugs. Data will be presented about the current role of medical therapy for CAD. Surgery is considered the standard of care for treatment of CAD and improvements in surgical technique have further improved outcomes over the last 20 years. Carotid stent placement may have a role in the treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic carotid disease. Current data will be presented regarding the outcomes after carotid stent placement for asymptomatic and symptomatic disease. Furthermore, data will be presented about the role of carotid stent placement for the treatment an acute ischemic stroke. Finally, the role of transcarotid artery revascularization in the treatment of carotid stenosis will be discussed.
