A global obesity epidemic is driving a rise in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In parallel, NASH cirrhosis is the fasted rising cause of HCC. Accordingly, the practice of IR will need to understand how treating patients with NAFLD may differ from other types of cirrhosis and other causes of HCC. Of note, the desert southwest, including the host state for SIR 2023, Arizona, has two ethnic groups with increased incidence of NAFLD/NASH: Native American and Hispanic populations.
