For interventional radiologists interested or experienced in cerebral angiography, carotid revascularization, and/or endovascular stroke thrombectomy, the 2023 SIR Stroke Course provides participants with the latest in stroke education. Topics include updates on stroke trials, emerging areas including low ASPECTS, low NIHSS, and medium vessel occlusion stroke, and challenging stroke interventions in refractory and tandem occlusion cases.

Program objectives

Upon completion of this course, an attendee should be able to:

Describe recent developments and summarize the findings of clinical trials of thrombectomy for AIS
Describe clinical trials and techniques for low ASPECTS, low NIHSS, and medium vessel occlusion AIS
Describe data and technical challenges for stroke interventions in refractory and tandem occlusion AIS
Describe patient selection, techniques, and complications of thrombectomy for AIS

Course guidelines

In September 2019, SIR published updated training guidelines for IRs performing endovascular thrombectomy to treat patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke. The training guidelines were published on the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) website.

The training guidelines detail the cognitive and procedural skills interventional radiologists must obtain and maintain to effectively treat patients using endovascular thrombectomies (EVTs), including patient diagnosis and selection; brain imaging competencies; clinical patient care before, during and after the procedure; and the ability to identify and manage complications. The new guidelines will ensure IRs stay current in the performance of this life-changing and function-saving treatment. Read the full guidelines.

In addition to the guidelines, JVIR also published a commentary from SIR President Laura Findeiss, MD, FSIR, reflecting the important role IRs have played in caring for acute ischemic stroke patients and outlining SIR’s current quality and advocacy efforts. SIR leaders are engaged in ongoing discussions with the Joint Commission and other stakeholder organizations to ensure experienced and appropriately trained IRs continue to be included on stroke teams. This collaboration with other specialty societies and oversight bodies is focused on working towards a common understanding of quality standards in this area of interventional practice.
