Rob Holtackers studied Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he completed his master's degree in Medical Engineering cum laude in 2015. After a 4-month research internship at King's College London, he started his PhD research at the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+) in late 2015.
In 2017, Rob became a research staff member within the department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, where as an MRI physicist he is responsible for the development of new cardiac MRI techniques and their implementation in routine care. In 2019 he was appointed as honorary visiting research associate within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King's College London, carrying out his work in both Maastricht and London.
In May 2022, Rob finished his PhD with cum laude distinction with his thesis 'Visualising the invisible: dark-blood late gadolinium enhancement MRI for improved detection of subendocardial scar'. In this dissertation, he described the development, validation and implementation of a novel MRI method for improved detection and more accurate quantification of subendocardial scar tissue.
After his PhD research, Rob continued his work as MRI physicist at the MUMC+ and honorary visiting senior research fellow at King's College London. Rob is also active as a section editor for 'Topics in MRI' and review editor for 'Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine', he is a member of the international cardiac MRI examination board of the EACVI, and he annually provides his own educational course on the basics of MRI.
