João Augusto is a consultant cardiologist, cardiac imaging specialist, and clinical researcher with particular expertise and interest in cardiovascular magnetic resonance, cardiomyopathies and machine learning. He finished his cardiac MRI training at Barts Heart Centre and is a PhD student year 4 at University College London. He currently is the head of the Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Department at the Fernando Fonseca Hospital, Lisbon, an Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Cardiologist at Hospital CUF Tejo, Lisbon, and a senior lecturer at the Catholic Medical School, Lisbon. He is EACVI HIT Ambassador for CMR/CT/SPECT Portugal and member of the Portuguese CMR/CT/Nuclear working group. He was part of the organizing committee for London CMR and coordinated the session recording teams for SCMR 2019 and 2020. He has won a Young Investigator Award for his work in Fabry disease in the 2020 WORLDSymposium Meeting in Orlando and was young-investigator finalist at 8 international meetings over the course of his PhD, including BSCMR, BCS and The Royal Society of Medicine. His PhD work encompasses the characterization of the cardiovascular phenotype of Fabry disease and the use of machine learning to increase precision in the measurement of left ventricular hypertrophy. He first described a ring-like LGE pattern in patients with desmoplakin / filamin-C mutations and LV-dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, now frequently used as a diagnostic marker by the CMR community.
