Lazaro E. Hernandez, MD, FAAP, FSCMR
Dr. Lazaro Hernandez is a pediatric imaging cardiologist who is originally from Cuba where he completed his training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology with additional fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Imaging.
After his relocation to the United States in 2007, Dr. Hernandez completed for a second time his Pediatric Residency at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York followed by a Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. In addition, Dr. Hernandez has also undertaken additional training in pediatric and congenital cardiac MRI at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Hernandez is currently the Medical Director of the Pediatric/Congenital Advanced Cardiac Imaging Program at the Pediatric Heart Institute, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. He has established a very strong research environment at the Heart Institute.
Dr. Hernandez’s main areas of research and most recent publications involve the non-invasive diagnosis of rejection and coronary vasculopathy in pediatric heart transplantation and also the use of cardiac MRI/stress perfusion in pediatric cardiomyopathy.
Dr. Hernandez is an active Fellow of the Society of Cardiac MRI and active reviewer for several cardiac imaging peer review journals. He is also an active member and Chapter lead for CMR and CT for the International Society of Nomenclature in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.
In his spare time, Dr. Hernandez enjoys traveling with his wife, son and daughter. He enjoys movies and music as well as spending time outdoors in the sunny South Florida. Dr. Hernandez is a passionate fan of the LA Dodgers baseball team.
