Background: We evaluated the CMR-derived left ventricular longitudinal strain (LVLS) and ascending aortic area strain (AAAS) in patients with severe coarctation of aorta (CoA) before and after endovascular repair

Methods: 8 patients with severe CoA were studied. LVLS were measured using CMR-feature tracking. AAAS was measured at the level of ascending aorta. LV and LA end-diastolic volumes (EDV), ejection fraction (EF) and mass were measured before intervention and at 1-year follow-up.

Results: Seven cases were analysable, 3 male/4 female, mean patient age was 25.6 ± 12.4 (years). All patients have successful endovascular repair. 3 patients have 1-year CMR follow-up study. CMR characteristics before and after treatment are shown in the following table.

Conclusion: AAAS is significantly reduced in patients with severe COA who undergoes endovascular repair and did not improve at 1-year after endovascular repair. LVEF and LVLS are improved after repair with reduction of LV mass, LV EDV and LA EDV at 1-year. This is the first report on cardio-vascular MRI characteristics before and after endovascular treatment of COA, however, the small sample size in our preliminary report limits the generalisation of the results and larger cohort study is warranted.
