When I began this quilt, I had in mind the way my son, when he was small, used to draw complicated diagrams of imaginary machinery. He enjoyed explaining to me in detail how that machine would work, describing the role of each moving part. I began this quilt by first doodling in the way Charlie would, and then, without consulting my doodles, I took my play to the design wall. My work is never serious – it’s always about creative play. I wanted to see what would happen if I doodled in fabric. I used a combination of piecing and raw edge applique to complete the top. The quilting was improvised as well; I wanted to keep playing with the design to see what could be added with the quilting. With the piecing and the quilting, I kept asking "what next?" until I was happy with the results.
