My inspiration for this quilt was the traditional carpenters square block. I worked to reimagine it, approaching this quilt by thinking how I would construct the block, if I didn’t know the customary way the block would have been pieced. My objective, was to create a spontaneous and dynamic composition. I freehand cut inserts in various widths and played with how I would set them, purposely embracing the wobble. I added unexpected crossed inserts to express the energy I was looking for in the quilt. I particularly enjoy the juxtaposition of the lines where the blocks meet, and the pleasing disruption that this creates within the overall structure of the design. I chose an unencumbered interpretation of echo quilting to match the energy of the piecing.
