This quilt was inspired by a lecture from Stephanie Jacobson at the Quilt Africa Summit 2022 organized by Miriam Galadima Benson owner of Quilt Africa store, Uganda. The lecture was about the construction of HST, a shape so basic to traditional quilting that I had yet to master. I put together a variety of African cotton fabrics and Kona cotton to create this quilt. I was amazed at how many traditional blocks can be created with HST. Starting with the Crystal Star in the middle, your eyes can wonder from one block to another as you find pinwheels, square in a square, zig zags, ocean waves, and others. I selected African fabrics to celebrate their bright colors and bold designs that have made them so popular and recognizable. This quilt was fun to make as the simple shape of HST help you to improvise and create with freedom.
