A one day break in a busy working schedule, I went for a drive and soon found myself surrounded by beautiful Australian bushland in the Dorrigo National Park. Many birds and animals abound, although sometimes the insects and invertebrates are the most interesting. In the entanglement of some tree roots was an extraordinarily constructed funnel-web spider nest. A fascinating structure, yet a frightening thought that one of the deadliest spiders may reside in there. A personal challenge was to interpret this structure in a quilt. Knowing there is multiple anchor points for the web threads, a log cabin structure provided these anchor points for my ‘web threads’ as the subsequent rounds were added. Creating the funnelled illusion was achieved by progressively increasing the width of the log cabin strips and the width of each ‘web thread’ fabric strip.
