This quilt was a self-challenge, after reading an opinion that modern quilts were defined as only using an alternative grid layout, to see if I could make an improv quilt using a traditional structure that felt modern. The challenge was to create something with a traditional diamond in a square Amish pattern, auditioning different improv elements and selecting the ones that felt most impactful, employing repetition and mirroring of those elements to fulfill the challenge. I was inspired by the work of improv artists Gwen Martson, Irene Roderick, and Maria Shell and the geometric graphic art of Kandinsky. The Windham Ruby and Bee solid fabrics were a perfect complement for this project. If you look closely, you may see an abstract cat. Once you see it you can't un-see it.
