To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Modern Quilt Guild, I wanted to contribute to that celebration with a quilt that highlights some of the characteristics that MQG lists as those that "help identify a modern quilt." (See What is Modern Quilting? on the MQG website.) This minimalist design incorporates high contrast solids, improvisational piecing, and negative space. Additionally, it is quilted with horizontal straight-line quilting that is interrupted with shapes that echo the angles created by the X. Black long-stitch hand-quilting outlines the X adding horizontal bars that hint at the serifs on a Roman numeral X which represents the number 10. Finally, the quilt is finished with facing, a final modern element.
