For this figure-ground study in black and white I created several blocks of different mirrored images as a starting point. The curved lines and pointed corners of the freehand cut shapes create movement, while swapping some of the dark and light shapes and adding additional motifs in the final composition dilute the distinction between foreground and background. Using all white and all black thread across all elements in each half of the quilt further shifts the focus between dark and light, and creates the illusion of depth through the gradually narrowing and widening of the quilting lines.
