Retro Jazz was composed using left over blocks and pieces from various unrelated earlier projects and experiments. A mix of traditional blocks such as the Drunkard's Path and Half Square Triangles were combined with improvisational pieces, and scraps to bind all the elements together. I started it during a Kitchen Sink Quilting workshop with Maria Shell and reinvented it many times over the following weeks to a final composition in which circles and curves take center stage. The concept of using old to create new stretches across many parts of our society, and is applied both practically and artistically in numerous ways. For me it opened up a different avenue of creativity with surprising results.
