This quilt began life as a giant lone star, hand pieced using English Paper Piecing. Using almost all solids, I machine pieced some "made fabric" and then fussy cut it up from different angles to get a fractured effect. I experimented with oversizing some pieces and fragmenting others to add movement and light throughout. When I had made enough large diamonds to complete the giant lone star, I realized it needed a dark center to let all those slivers shine. This elongated layout allows the eye to travel around the quilt instead of being stuck only within the star. I followed a similar piecing strategy for the negative space, using multiple navies and purples to get a subtle fracturing effect in the background.
