"Into the blue" is a phrase that conjures up a hazy, deep space into which one can disappear. This quilt takes its inspiration from the Op Art paintings of the 1960’s. Painters like Bridget Riley and Carlos Cruz-Diez used contrasting strips of color to create optical effects on flat canvases through patterns and line-work. Because strip piecing is a long-standing form in both traditional and modern quilting, I thought there could be an opportunity to experiment with the technique to produce wilder visual illusions. Using crisp, tapered fabric strips in alternating, contrasting colors, I made a fuzzy depth. The hard edged-ness of the individual fabric strips belies the overall softness of the resulting space.
