Conceptual works often originate as a problem or frustration. Much like an evidence board in a crime drama, my work is an obsessive reflection focused on the diaristic, personal pain, and the everyday. Scraps are constantly around me- formed while my attention is elsewhere. Looking through them, I can either recall their origin, or marvel that I made them with no recollection at all. Scrap quilts are a practical method for reckoning with the unintended consequences of my actions. I piece these works with minimal interference so that the viewer might sift through the shapes like a detective- or even an archaeologist. The quilts lead to more questions around unconscious creation and assumed paradigms. They ask me to reflect on intentions and impact beyond the materiality of my studio. This series began in my ARTservancy Artists Residency, and then became the basis of my Scrap Quilt Workshop online.
