98.7 degrees started as a quilt top inspired by an aboriginal painting. For years, the quilt top sat in my closet as I struggled to accept and finish it. Although the quilt was not an exact copy, it had a lot of similarities to the original artwork. As I became more educated on cultural appropriation, I knew it had to be cut it up and reworked in my own voice. The red pieces are all from the original quilt. I then wove them into a black background with the blue and grey accents. As I worked on this quilt, I was dealing with severe hot flashes from menopause. I started to see the ebb and flow of the flushes in the red and the blue as my body's attempt to cool itself down. Because of my Covid paranoia, I took my temperature often, but it never exceed 98.7 degrees!
