Improvisation
(IMP047) Standard Individual
Speaker(s)
Julee Hightower Ryle

This quilt started as a "quilt journal". I was thinking about my time as an art student in NYC 20 years ago and how I used to walk the city sidewalks for hours to Museums, Galleries, Parks and Botanical gardens. I loved spending a day at the Met or the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. I spent countless hours soaking in everything at the Museum of Natural History. I used my old sheets from college and a thrifted floral shirt that I used to wear. The sheets are threadbare and faded into different shades of tan. The tag says "Standard Individual". Bits of appliqué black print and gold streaked blue represent the culture, history and wealth of the city that was fascinating to 19 year old me. Grey bits and grey binding represent the weathered sidewalks that felt endless with possibility. Hand quilting is the footsteps up and down the city streets.
