This was an early value study from my first class with Nancy Crow, before color was introduced. Using ruler free cutting, with no templates or patterns I created a dynamic figure/ground composition, and then figured out how to put it together. The middle value can be either figure or ground, and the quilting designs help to differentiate. I like the stark, dynamic contrasts in the monochromatic piece and it has had a great impact on how I work presently.
