This quilt is one of my first attempts to create an abstract design using tiny piecing as its core. I was inspired to make this design after taking a Debra Jalbert’s “Leftovers” workshop. My design idea was to have one or more focal points and to somehow “explode” the center of each outwards to create a sense of motion. I used colorful and bold prints from AGF’s Avantgarde line by Katerina Roccella to enhance the modern, abstract feel of the design. My technique for expanding beyond the centers, was to use a log cabin-style approach. The matchstick quilting was completed on my domestic Babylock machine, using 40 weight Aurifil cotton thread. In the end, I named it “Piece by Piece” because I had little experience creating such an improvisational quilt and agonized over the selection and placement of every piece of fabric!
