This improv quilt is inspired by pen and ink calligraphy on paper. I was showing my granddaughter how I used to practice calligraphy strokes with an old fashioned nibs dipped in India ink and I was struck by all the different types of lines made by all the different nibs from delicate lines made by quill-type nibs to broad, bold strokes made by steel blades. How beautiful even the roughest of marks can be…how the blades of the nibs can separate marking the ink vary in density on the paper paper. Practice can reveal so much about the process and the person practicing. Imperfection can be so lovely
