My inspiration for the design came from a jewelry ad that once popped in my Instagram feed. I liked the shapes of the curves in the ad picture and tried to replicate them in the quilt. The checkerboard was my attempt at adding an extra dimension. When the piecing was finished, I didn’t think the design was interesting enough, so I decided to add the big stitch quilting, and I added a lot of it. While I was hand quilting, Hurricane Ian was making its course towards us, and the talk of my city centered around the rising tides which often bring the flooding after a hurricane. I thought the name was appropriate for this piece. The quilt was improv pieced and quilted on my domestic Bernina as well as hand quilting.
