This project started as an exercise taken from Maria Shell's Improv Patchwork book. The rules I set to begin with were: work from scraps, make two-colour blocks using ruler-cut strips and assemble the blocks with partial seams. The linen-cotton scraps and the chambray with neon yellow and pink flecks were the starting point for choosing the colour palette. As the layout was evolving on my design wall, my tendency to include negative space took over and I slightly changed the initial rules by using larger pieces of fabric as well. I mixed two different dark blue solids and used various thread colours for the quilting to add slight shades to the background. The quilting is a mix of horizontal lines and grids with different spacing, complemented with hand stitches using a neon sashiko thread.
