A construct meant to encourage the viewer to consider the implied depth of a predominantly 2D artwork. Multiple layers are created by the careful use of values and further emphasized by the quilting. Contrary to many quilts, color is a secondary consideration and is only selected from the value required. Dark values are closer to you, light values are farther away. Layers are accentuated by quilting direction and spacing. A wide variety of thread colors keep your eye moving when close to the piece. The underlying web is reinforced by the hand quilting.
