Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
This is one of three quilts I produced for a 2022 exhibition called 'The Before Times' at the Wangaratta Art Gallery in Victoria, Australia, which was curated by Tara Glastonbury (@stitchandyarn). Each quilt uses a limited palette – with each pair of quilts sharing at least three colours – and a single shape. Magmatic uses curves: quarter-circles (or drunkard’s paths) and elongated 2:1 curves (inspired by the long oval drunkard’s path templates from Jenny Haynes of Papper, Sax, Sten). Combining these two curves creates an organic flow – like slow-moving magma – across the quilt design. Careful colour placement obscures the borders between blocks and enhances the overall movement.
