Made for my 9-year-old son’s bed, I was inspired to make this quilt after reading Irene Roderick’s “Improv Quilting” book. I started by creating one patchwork element, putting it up on the design wall, and allowing that element to inspire what came next. Several odd shapes and clusters of shapes — including traditional blocks like the hourglass — lead the eye around the quilt. Bold colors keep the energy flowing. The reds in the background helped add depth and offer a little something else to explore.
