“Ray’s Georgia” is a tribute to the state of Georgia’s music icon, Ray Charles, who lost his sight as a child. The main body of the quilt depicts, in braille, the first verse of the Georgia state song that Ray made famous, “Georgia on My Mind.” The raised appliqué braille “dots” display the colors of the Georgia state flag and are constructed of a smooth African print wrapped around a wool felt core. The background fabric is a coarse blue linen blend, which creates a visual and tactile contrast. The entire lyrics to the song are embroidered in braille using French knots along the bottom of the quilt. The raised appliqué, contrasting fabric textures, and embroidery are all designed to be enjoyed through the sense of touch, particularly by those, who like Ray Charles, read the braille language. *Braille translation using Two Blind Brothers Braille Translator.
