Lisa Karstens, PhD is an Assistant Professor at Oregon Health & Science University in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology with a joint appointment in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Karstens completed her PhD in Chemistry at Princeton University. She then joined Oregon Health and Science University as National Library of Medicine funded post doc in bioinformatics, and then continued post doctoral training urogynecology. She became faculty in 2016 and was awarded a BIRCWH K12 career development award followed by an NIH NIDDK K01 to further knowledge about the bacteria in the bladder and their contributions to overactive bladder symptoms in women.
Dr. Karstens’ interdisciplinary lab investigates the human microbiome and its association with health and disease, with a strong focus on women’s health and bladder disorders. Her current research includes the development of bioinformatic tools and novel integrative multi-omic approaches to improve the analysis of microbial communities and microbiome function to improve the clinical utility of microbiomes. Much of this work has focused on improving the reliability and reproducibility of sequenced-based studies investigating the lower urinary tract microbiome (the urobiome), which is typically a low microbial niche in the absence of an acute infection.
