3:30 PM – 4:45 PM
Location: Morial Convention Center, Room 388-390
Level of Participation: Medium
What do your patrons and students see and read on a continual basis? Are their identities and experiences reflected in the books within your library? Are multiple identities and experiences of others also included through the readings? Are your readers exposed to award winning texts that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values? In this session, discover how you can audit your library, and develop an equitable, inclusive, and diverse collection that will include Coretta Scott King Book Awards winners and honor titles. Next, we’ll review strategies that you’ll utilize to use these titles as a part of instruction in the school library. Strategies for integrating these titles into your public library programming will be presented as well. Ensure all your patrons can see multiple possibilities for themselves and others through the inclusion of culturally responsive, diverse books in your library!
Upon completion, the participants will have immediate applicable skills to develop their collections to lead
& affect change in their communities through introducing and honoring diverse voices and experiences.
Through this program, participants will have actionable ideas, suggestions, and book lists of award winners/honors to create engaging programming and inclusive instruction by bringing broader understanding to honor diverse experiences.
Through this program, participants will engage in solution-focused dialogue with librarian peers as they perform sample diversity audits and evaluations so they can apply the strategies/tools to their library collections.
