We know every librarian wants to present a library space that looks welcoming and cheerful. Just as carefully as each book display is selected, each piece of furniture should also be chosen. In school libraries, small spaces often support multiple types of student group arrangements and needs throughout the day. How does such a small space invite students in for book checkout, support teachers bringing small groups to quietly learn, allow open floor space for wild STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) projects, and quickly transform into group work space at tables? Learn specific instructional strategies for student engagement in the library paired with the furniture and equipment to make it happen. We can all think of students from the past who had challenges in our space. How could your library design support these specific students? If you're feeling limited by your current library design, let's think outside your space!
