Alexander B. Koven, MD

Alexander is a urology resident in the Department of Surgery and a master’s student in the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. Prior to medicine, he studied chemical engineering and has an interest in biomedical engineering, medical biophysics, medical device development and entrepreneurship. His research is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Monica Farcas and Dr. Darren Yuen. His focus is on fibrosis of the genitourinary tract, which develops in the context of common conditions, such as chronic kidney disease and bladder outlet obstruction. He works to develop non-invasive tools, such as photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging, to image both fibrosis and perfusion. He also performs translational research aimed at developing these tools for clinical use.
