Tom Hulsey - PCa survivor - 11 years NED
Throughout my journey, I've consistently focused on serving others—whether through volunteering, fundraising, mentoring, public speaking, advocating on Capitol Hill, or serving on boards dedicated to medical research:
• AUA Clinical Trials Collective patient advocate
• UCF Patient Education Council patient advocate
• AUA News Editorial board ( 2 years)
• UT Southwestern research advocate (4 years)
• Mary Crowley Cancer Research board (5 years)
• North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition board (3 years)
• ZERO Prostate Cancer board (7 years)
This emphasis on giving back aligns with the ideals of servant leadership, where contributing is its own reward rather than pursuing personal benefit.
Philanthropic Recognition:
• Lauren Beam Philanthropy Award at the New York University School of Professional Studies for “dedication and contributions toward philanthropic efforts that resulted in significant, positive effects on the world of sports and beyond.”
• Jan Klodner Service Above Self Leadership Award for “lifetime visionary service.”
Experiencing three life-altering illnesses, including severe heart disease, have given me valuable insights and a renewed sense of purpose. Having been both a patient and an advocate, I am deeply committed to leveraging my experiences to drive meaningful change and promote global health. My life’s work is devoted to supporting and motivating others who face serious or transformative challenges. My motivation lies in encouraging people to be proactive about their well-being by sharing what I’ve learned firsthand. Healthcare and advancing our overall quality of life are passions that continue to inspire me. As a patient, survivor, and advocate with active engagement in the community, I have utilized my background and personal experiences to inform my work. My experience demonstrates that increased participation by advocates enhances the impact of advocacy, ultimately benefiting the community and supporting progress for cancer patients.
